At the end of October, elevated levels of aflatoxin B1 were found in a batch of maize from southern France. The batch had been processed into compound feed for dairy cattle, some of which, after analysis, was found to contain aflatoxin B1 levels above the standard. As a result, feed was recalled from dairy farmers. This feed has been retrieved and the dairy farms have been cleared to resume milk delivery.
During the emergency, the assurance system worked as intended. The participant involved acted effectively by taking the necessary measures. As a result, the impact of the emergency was limited to its own customers.
Timely detection and adequate follow-up prevented further risks and ensured continuity within the chain.
SecureFeed has an Aflatoxin Protocol that describes measures for guaranteeing maize and maize by-products in the (animal) feed chain. After evaluation, temporary additional measures were implemented for maize (by-products) from countries at risk of Aflatoxin B1.
